**MATH PLACEMENT AND CASAS MATH TESTING** [What to expect when you take a Math Placement Test at CWI.](https://youtu.be/I4Kz-3_RjW4?si=DWW70lnNT3-e2kMO?useTarget=_blank) CWI uses placement tests to check academic skill levels of students and place them in the correct course level. **We usually experience a high demand for tests just before the beginning of a new semester. If you are not planning to take a math class in the upcoming semester, we ask you to wait until the semester begins to take the math placement test. Thank you for your understanding.** Course and Program Placement tests are available to students planning to take degree credit and certificate courses at the College of Western Idaho . An ACT and/or SAT exam score that is 3 years old or less, is used to determine the placement of an incoming student into the appropriate mathematics course. Students who do not have ACT or SAT scores or previous college Math courses will need to take the Math Placement Exams to determine placement. Students who wish to place higher than their ACT or SAT scores allow may also take the Math Placement Exams. To see the ACT, SAT, or Placement Test results needed for most math classes, click **[here](https://cwi.edu/academic-resources/placement-testing#math_place)**. The mathematics course which is required for graduation of degree-seeking students is determined by the students’ chosen major. **It is strongly recommended that students complete the placement tests during the semester prior to starting classes. This will give enough time for their scores to be properly recorded in the school's computer system. Knowing a student's results will assist Math Coaches and Academic Advisors as they help students properly plan their course of study. Also, it allows the student time to retake tests, if needed.** For Math Placement exam review, please visit: **[College Prep Math page](https://cwi.edu/current-students/math-solutions-center#4)** To learn how to more effectively use your calculator, please visit: **[Calculator Basics Training](https://d.cwi.edu/www/storyline/student_calculator_basics/story.html?_ga=2.75512146.631893155.1678719754-1886229261.1594322399)** Each section of the Math Placement exam may be taken twice (initial attempt plus one retake). The waiting period between attempts on a single section is one day. Upon completion of this assessment process, the scores and math course placement can be evaluated with each student to develop an appropriate plan. This process will be completed by the student and a Math Coach immediately after the student has completed their diagnostic test. Students should also consult with their Student Success Advisor prior to their first registration to develop a first-semester schedule and overall education plan. **ITEMS TO BRING FOR YOUR PLACEMENT TESTING** * Please bring a valid **Photo ID** (expired ID is not valid). * Accepted forms of ID are Driver's License, State ID Card, Military ID Card, Passport, Permanent Resident Card, CWI Student ID Card, or current-year High School ID card for current High School students.
